Muse Confirm ‘New Moon’ Track

September 21, 2009

Matt Bellamy has confirmed that Muse have been approached to provide a song for the New Moon soundtrack.

The rockers, who have been widely linked to the Twilight sequel, revealed to MTV News that they had discussed recording a new version of a song from their album The Resistance.

“I spoke to the director yesterday and he wants the track ‘I Belong To You’, the sort of vaudeville piano track,” explained Bellamy.

“He wants a rendition of that but the only thing with the new film is they want the songs to be exclusive to the film. So he’s asking if I mind doing, or if we mind doing an alternative version of it.”

He added: “I think it’s alright – if it was one of the main tracks on the album I would never do it. But it’s actually one of the weirder tracks on the album. [It's] one of the ‘can’t believe we got away with it’ kind of tracks.

“I think it might be worth giving it a go because it’s a track that might not get played live very often… one of the obscure tracks off the album so it might give that track some life that it wouldn’t have otherwise.”

Death Cab For Cutie recently revealed their contribution to the highly-anticipated soundtrack, a track called ‘Meet Me On The Equinox’.

Muse At Number 1

September 20, 2009

Rock band Muse have entered the UK album chart at number one, ending the reign of wartime singer Dame Vera Lynn after just one week.

Their new release The Resistance also beat Peter Andre into third place, followed by fresh entries by rap star Jay-Z, David Gray and Pixie Lott.

In the singles chart, London-born singer Taio Cruz entered at number one with Break Your Heart.

Madonna had to settle for third spot with her latest song Celebration.

Musical blend

It was the only other new song inside the top 10, while Colombian star Shakira’s latest single She Wolf rose 20 places to number five.

Muse, who hail from Devon, outsold the next top three albums combined, according to the Official UK Charts Company.

2 David Guetta ft. Akon – Sexy Chick
3 Madonna – Celebration
4 Jay-Z – Run This Town
5 Shakira – She Wolf

It is their third chart-topping collection following Black Holes and Revelations from 2006 and Absolution (2003).

Their new album blends their stadium rock sound with opera and classical music, which they are set to back up with an ambitious live show.

Cruz has already lent his skills to other artists, and scored two number one singles as a songwriter with Will Young’s Your Game and Never Leave You by Tinchy Stryder.

He is currently also working on Cheryl Cole’s forthcoming album.

Bellamy’s Answer to Allen’s File Share Rant

September 20, 2009

Muse lead singer Matt Bellamy has responded to comments made by Lily Allen earlier this week [15 September] surrounding illegal file-sharing.

In an email to the singer, Bellamy explains that he feels “file-sharing is the norm” and that ISPs [internet service providers] should be taxed for allowing users the broadband space to download files illegally.

The Teignmouth singer also suggests that the pair meet government Business Secretary Lord Mandelson “as he is on this issue at the moment”.

In a blog Lily Allen had suggested that illegal file-sharing was a “disaster” and was having a “dangerous effect” on British music.

Further detail

In his email to Allen published on her MySpace blog, Bellamy explains that “file-sharing is now the norm. This cannot be changed without an attack on perceived civil liberties which will never go down well”.

He goes on to explain: “The problem is that the ISPs making the extreme profits (due to millions of broadband subscriptions) are not being taxed by the copyright owners correctly and this is a legislation issue.”

“Radio stations and TV stations etc have to pay the copyright owners (both recording and publishing) a fee for using material they do not own.

“ISPs should have to pay in the same way with a collection agency like PRS doing the monitoring and calculations based on encoded (but freely downloaded) data.

“Broadband makes the internet essentially the new broadcaster. This is the point which is being missed.”

He also suggests that people who download more should be taxed more saying “usage should also be priced accordingly”.

Muse’s fifth studio album The Resistance was released this week.

Sounding A Bit Queenish – Muse

September 17, 2009

Muse venture beyond the black hole Muse:

Chris Wolstenholme, Matt Bellamy and Dom Howard

By Tim Masters Entertainment correspondent, BBC News

Glam rock… Chopin… crooning… and an orchestral voyage into space.

Welcome to The Resistance, the new album from Muse that looks poised to top the UK album chart this weekend. The follow-up to 2006’s Black Holes and Revelations sees Muse blending their stadium rock sound with classical music and opera.

Dom Howard talks Vera Lynn and James Bond And drummer Dom Howard hints the new songs are likely to wow audiences on the Muse autumn tour. “I’m going to be playing the drums three metres up in the air – it’ll be pretty scary up there,” says Howard as he reveals details of the band’s ambitious live plans. “We’ll be on these three pillars moving up and down. “We’ve always wanted to do something more theatrical than we have in the past. “When we played at Wembley Stadium we had these acrobats on balloons, and it made everyone look at them and not at us, so we felt a little bit relaxed, so we’re going to try an incorporate a few performers.”

Howard also reveals that the stage show might contain an additional level of drama. “There might be a loose narrative that we’re trapped in some kind of institution and we’re trying to break out of it,” he says. “It’s going to look impressive.”

Sci-fi fantasy?

Muse have twice been voted Britain’s best live act at the Brit awards – but bringing some of their new material to the live arena will be a challenge. Muse Matt Bellamy Muse have a reputation for impressive stage shows One of the biggest talking points of The Resistance is the three-part symphony Exogenesis that closes the album. Over 13 minutes it features a 40-piece orchestra, scaling synths, mournful piano and Matt Bellamy’s trademark falsetto.

But what’s it all about? “It’s like a sci-fi fantasy,” explains Howard. “Exogenesis is about pinning our hopes on a few people – or astronauts – to leave this planet and find a new place to populate and start a new civilisation. “It’s certainly an ambitious piece of music – it’s very classical sounding. There’s lots of strings and brass and timpani. It was quite hard to do because we had to change the way we approached normal song writing.” Howard admits it will be a challenge to play live. “Since the last album we’ve had a fourth person on stage playing keyboards.

That helps a great deal with instrumentation. “But it would be nice to incorporate some real strings into the shows. Exogenesis is definitely going to be a a big moment in the set. Because it’s quite a quiet song we want a really cool piece of film that takes you on a journey…” Muse Another key track on the album – United States of Eurasia – has drawn comparisons to classic Queen. Was that something that was quite deliberate? “I guess people have thought it sounds a bit like Queen, particularly that big chord and the big harmonies,” says Howard.

“When we did that in the studio we laughed a lot because it was so uplifting. It’s a real chest out, hand in the air moment in the song. He adds: “A lot of the recording process made us laugh – and that was one of those when we chuckled a lot, and we still do even when we play it live.”

The Resistance by Muse is out now.

Muse tour the UK throughout November.

Muse – Shaken Not Stirred

September 16, 2009

Dom Howard has said that Muse would definitely be interested in recording a theme song for a future James Bond movie.

The drummer told the BBC that the band’s music could well suit the style of the film franchise.

Howard said: “It’s something we’d probably say yes to, or at least give it a good go. Certainly some of our music fits with the James Bond vibe – and I think it could work.

“The last few have been pretty good. But I think we could do a good job. ‘United States of Eurasia’ could have worked but it’s probably a bit late for that now.”

Regarding the possibility of the group scoring a whole film, he added: “Matt [Bellamy] did the end credits for a film called The International. It’s not something we’ve done as a band, but we sometimes get asked for that kind of thing.

“It’s a bit weird in the Hollywood world, because you spend a lot time being told what to do and that’s a bit of a pain because we like to do what we want.

“So, I think if you can find a director you can really relate to, and it’s a great film, and you know you can work well together, then it could be a possibility.”

Muse Rock The Den!

September 6, 2009

THEY’D been away a long time but tonight Muse came home – and they were victorious.

The eclecto-electronic alt.rockers left Teignmouth as apprentices 15 years ago, and returned on Friday night to a heroes’ welcome.A Seaside Rendezvous is two nights of Muse playing for their home crowd, and the multi-award winners proved there’s no place like home.

10,000 people crowded into The Den on Teignmouth’s seafront under a full moon, and a clear sky. The weather was perfect. The Quails and Cosmo Jarvis had put everyone in the right mood – but where were Muse?Rumours whipped through the crowd that Robbie Williams was backstage. Someone spotted Jamie Oliver by the toilets. The crowd thought they could be in for a surprise, but by 9.20 they were growing restless, and all they wanted was the home team.

Then bang, all fear and doubt was blasted away as Muse took to the stage and took charge – blowing everyone away with Uprising, the immense new single from their soon to be released fifth studio album The Resistance. From that point on Muse had 10,000 people in the palm of their hand. The set was polished and powerful, packed with all the musical prowess and theatrical majesty we’ve come to expect.Waves of passion washed from the stage on a sea of smoke, light and lasers – and the crowd repaid it with an outpouring of adoration and pride.

The set expertly swung from powerhouse performances, such as the second track Supermassive Blackhole, to more subtle but equally moving tracks such as the new United States of Eurasia – an epic, classical, poetic, poltical pleasure to listen to.The crowd screamed, sang, bounced and waved to all the familiar tracks.Every word to Time Is Running Out, Starlight and many more rolled around The Den.When Muse left the stage the crowd chanted, begged for more but all was silent.

Then the siren, and finally Plug In Baby sent the crowd into a frenzy.

New material, including Unnatural Selection, blended with the familiar perfectly.Muse said Teignmouth is their home, but their home is the stage.Muse played the crowd like an instrument, and the crowd loved it.

Tonight we were all from Teignmouth. Tonight we were all Muse fans.

SETLIST: Uprising; Supermassive Black Hole; Stockholm Syndrome; Resistance; Hysteria; New Born; Map Of The Problematique; United States of Eurasia; Popcorn; Starlight; Undisclosed Desires; Time Is Running Out; Unnatural Selection; Man With A Harmonica; Plug In Baby; Knights Of Cydonia.
