Muse On The Twilight New Moon & Eclipse Soundtracks

October 19, 2009

Whether they wanted to or not, Muse have pretty much established themselves as the resident “Twilight” band. After being frequently shouted out by author Stephenie Meyer, the British rockers’ “Supermassive Black Hole” was featured on the soundtrack to the first film. It surprised absolutely no one that they were asked to record a song for the second flick in the franchise, “New Moon,” but the band is pretty flattered to be the only artists to appear on both discs.

“It might be something to do with Stephenie Meyer and that she loves us,” drummer Dominic Howard told MTV News. “We met her quite awhile ago in Phoenix — it was before ‘Twilight’ came out. She’s a very nice lady and talked about how she listens to our music as she writes her books. This is all way before it turned into this huge success that it is, before everyone went vampire nuts.”

But now that everyone has gone “vampire nuts,” Howard says they’re happy to benefit from the extra exposure. “I think our music has reached out to whole loads of new people that haven’t heard us before,” he said. “It’s great to know that people are discovering our music. It’s a nice side project to be involved in.”

Muse originally recorded the piano ballad “I Belong to You” for their latest album, The Resistance. But just as that album came out, the brain trust behind the “Twilight” flicks asked them to rework the track for “New Moon.”

“I know the director [Chris Weitz] really, really liked that track,” Howard said. “He really wanted to get it into a scene somewhere, but they wanted a slightly different vibe of what was already recorded for the album.”

So, they headed back into the studio, and Howard said he’s quite pleased with the results. “It’s a bit more rock in some ways,” he said. “We rocked it up a bit and put some guitars on it and did an alternative mix.”

Although Muse will soon be heading out on a tour, Howard said they might be able to fit the film’s premiere into their schedules. “I think we got invited to the premiere, which might be in London the day before one of our shows in London,” he said. “I liked the first one. I thought it was quite cool. I thought it was quite raw as well.”

Muse are apparently fully embracing their status as the “Twilight” band. They’ve already had their track “Supermassive Black Hole” on the first film’s soundtrack, and come Friday, Twilighters can get their hands on the “New Moon” soundtrack, which features the group’s remixed track “I Belong to You.”

Now it looks like there’s a good chance the British rockers will be back for even more vampy fun on the “Eclipse” soundtrack. “It’s great to have the feeling of being a new band again in so many people’s eyes or minds … we might even do something for the third one,” drummer Dominic Howard told MTV News. “How about that for a scoop?”

Nothing is set in stone yet, but Howard noted that besides being a favorite of “Twilight” author Stephenie Meyer, they also have an in with “Eclipse” director David Slade.

“[Slade is] kind of a friend of ours ’cause he directed about three or four of our videos for the second album, and he’s a really great video director,” Howard explained. “I know he did that really great kind of sick horror [film '30 Days of Night'] which was a bit of a vampire/zombie vibe, wasn’t it? So I think he’s a great director, and he’s quite a funny character as well. So, yeah, we might do something for him as well.”

Although Muse have no problems selling albums without the assistance of “Twilight,” Howard notes that they’re not going to pass up the chance to work on music for the hugely popular franchise. “That’s not the sole reason why people know about us, because this is now our fifth album,” he said. “But it’s a nice side project to be involved with.”

In a message on their website the band said: “Want to see your face on stage with the band? Muse would like to use your portraits as part of their amazing new live visuals.”

They’ve asked fans who want to get involved to send “a passport style portrait of you against a plain background” in order to be considered for selection.

BUFFY TO HIT BIG SCREEN?

November 29, 2008

SarahMichelleGellar.jpgAs we all know, Hollywood likes fads, if one thing works we can expect to see loads like it. And now the hoopla around Twilight, might mean a reappearance for Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Twilight does nothing for me, however Buffy used to. Is Whedon really into the idea of a film?

<!–

–>Twilight fans, and that’s all I call them (Richard has another name we shall not mention) are more than a little excited for the film version of the books. And despite the fact that vampire films are nothing new, Joss Whedon might be inspired to bring back something old-ish. Just a rumour at this stage but could he be trying to make a Buffy the Vampire Slayer film? The Herald Sun newspaper through Moviehole.net has this to say.

“Rumours are circulating in Hollywood that Whedon has a feature-film script based on his hit TV series ready to roll as soon as a studio is prepared to commit.”

The first Buffy film was pre Sarah Michelle Gellar, and starred Kristy Swanson. I wasn’t a huge fan of that film, but I was a bit partial to the TV show created by Whedon. I guess it’s a logical rumour to come out, on the back of Twilight causing such excitement. And if anyone could bring Buffy back it’s Whedon.

The TV show did have a pretty decent ending though, so I’m not sure I’d want that spoiled. A film catching up with them a few years later might be quite good though. Man, it’s only a rumour and I’m torn. Any Buffy fans out there? Would you want a film version with Gellar and David Boreanaz?

STARGATE UNIVERSE – PRE PRODUCTION

November 27, 2008

The third Stargate series marches rapidly toward its February shooting date, and pre-production is moving along at a rapid pace. Writer-producer Joseph Mallozzi has been updating fans on the show’s progress this month at his blog.

“Brad and Rob did a terrific job of kicking things off in thrilling fashion,” Mallozzi said of the premiere episode’s script. “The script is fast-paced and fun; its characters unique and engaging. My favorite: Dr. David Rush. Oh, he’s going to be a handful. Originally planned as a two-parter, Brad and Robert quickly discovered that there was simply too much story for such a tight frame, so the series opener is now looking like a three-parter.”

The complete writing staff from Stargate Atlantis is back to kick off the new series, including showrunners Brad Wright and Robert C. Cooper, plus Carl Binder, Martin Gero, Alan McCullough, Paul Mullie, and Mallozzi himself. (While Wright previously expressed an interest in bringing in new writers, there is no news yet on whether that will happen.)

Stories for the rest of Season One are being spun in the writer’s room at The Bridge Studios. “Brad has laid claim to #4, a story that is right up his alley,” Mallozzi continued. “Speaking of perfect pairings, I couldn’t think of anyone better than Carl Binder to write #5. Rob is eyeing #6 which offers a most intriguingly SF door in, while #7 and #8 have yet to be claimed.”

Martin Gero’s first script “involved a long, long discussion on the workings of a certain technology which forms the impetus to another terrific character-driven story.”

The team has left episode nine temporarily on the shelf to discuss episodes 10 and 11, which would typically be a mid-season two-parter for a Stargate series. But “I hesitate to call it a two-parter because, the way these episodes have developed so far, there are a threads that run through all the stories, in essence making this season one big 20-parter,” Mallozzi said.

Mallozzi will write episode 10, and Mullie number 11. The producer teased: “Ticking clocks, twists and turns, alliances, betrayals, and a surprise guest!”

Set on board an Ancient vessel called the Destiny, Universe follows Colonel Everett Young and a team of young and largely untested men and women. Stargate Universe will be more of a character-based show with more deliberate story arcs, as opposed to the more stand-alone, action-based nature of Atlantis and even SG-1.

But many fans are nervous about the new series and its apparent differences from what has made Stargate what it is over the past 12 years. Others, however, believe that this sort of change is just what the franchise needs in order to be reenergized.

“Stargate Universe is a series that draws on established mythology yet blazes a bold, new path for the franchise,” Mallozzi told fans. “It’s definitely more character-centered and intimate in its exploration of the interpersonal dynamics that will drive a lot of the shipboard developments (and, no, I’m not talking about romance). The premise of this ship hurtling through uncharted territories offers up unbounded story possibilities, yet also forces us to adopt a very different approach toward alien encounters and planetary investigation. Twin themes mentioned over the course of today’s conversations: survival and sacrifice.”

“The premise of SGU is … more intimate — a limited group of people trapped aboard a space ship hurtling through distant space — and therefore necessitates a more intimate form of storytelling.”

Mallozzi also said that the design of the Destiny is close to being decided. There is also a new Universe version of the M.A.L.P. probe in the works, the series is expected to premiere in the U.S. next July.

DOCTORIN’ THE TARDIS

November 6, 2008

Yes

David Tennant has had enough of the sideburns and whiny companions and has announced that he is to leave Doctor Who after completing his 4 ’special’ episodes in 2009. I have to say I have enjoyed his version of the Doctor, he has had to put up with Billie Piper’s terrible accent in her return as Rose and Catherine Tate who must’ve been dying to ask him “Am I Bovvered?”.

Which begs the question, who is going to replace him as the new Doctor? There is a list (see below) floating around with names of possible replacements, the usual suspects are there along with a few new surprises and it will be interesting to see who will fill Tennant’s shoes for the new series in 2010.

The List

David Morrissey
Mark Gatiss
Patterson Joseph
James McAvoy
James Nesbitt
Robert Carlyle
John Simm – The Master returneth?
Rhys Ifans
Anthony Head
Alan Davies
Jason Statham – this I hightly doubt as Id imagine he wants to concentrate on films…although :)
Nigel Harman
Bill Nighy
Daniel Radcliffe – Hell no to Harry Potter
Burn Gorman – Originally a member of Torchwood, I dont see this working
Stephen Fry
John Barrowman – The main star of Torchwood and an established character within the realms of Who as the Face of Boe
Christopher Eccleston
Richard E Grant
Rupert Penry-Jones
Tom Ellis
….or a female Doctor! – never say never

Anyone got any more ideas/thoughts?

4MUSIC BOLLOCKS – SHAME ON YOU!!

August 17, 2008

Well I must say that I am very disappointed in the live coverage that 4Music gave the headlining act at V yesterday, very, very disappointed. Having just gotten home from what was the best night of my life last night I was already inundated with texts and calls from mates unlucky to have attended to tell me the piss poor performance 4Music gave when Muse took the stage.

They showed 3 songs, the beginning, the middle and the end. For the launch of a channel, a music channel that promised us it was going to be showing the headling acts, this is a big letdown on their half.

I was told they mustve shown the Pidgeon Detectives whole set about 4 times, everything got a third and sometimes 4th airing but Muse only got 3 songs and that was it. One friend watched the entire 5 hours of supposedly live show thinking she was going to be seeing the Muse set but was upset and disappointed to be treated to play after play of the Prodigy and Stereophonics sets (who were both very good admittedly).

This isnt fair for those who couldnt get out to see Muse, this channel has been quite disrespectful to the artist as well, I thought the Beeb were bad when they left out the end of Muse’s set at the Reading/Leeds Fest but at least they showed the majority of the set from start to almost end.

4Music – Im giving you the middle finger salute – shame on you, it couldve been so much better!!

Anyway, for those of you unlucky to see Muse at V, here’s KOC at its ultimate best, its no wonder Muse have been crowned best live act for so many years!

Torchwood, 24 The Movie, Heroes

August 14, 2008

Russell T. Davies has revealed that Torchwood’s third season will be entitled ‘Children Of Earth’.

The mini season will run over five consecutive nights on BBC1 in Spring 2009 and be directed by Euros Lyn.

Davies exclusively told Torchwood Magazine: “More than ever before, this series of Torchwood will be director-led, and it will look absolutely amazing.”

Filming will begin in Cardiff on August 18 and details of casting are due to be released shortly. Freema Agyeman was expected to join the Torchwood team as Martha Jones, but her recent decision to join the cast of ITV1’s Law And Order has put her appearance in doubt.

**********************************

Kiefer Sutherland has confirmed that a 24 movie is likely to go ahead once the show is over.

The actor admitted that producers do not want his character Jack Bauer to hit the big screen until the programme itself has been cancelled.

“It’s certainly on the table,” Sutherland told Extra. “We would certainly be thrilled to make it, but we’re going to wait until the series is finished.”

Speaking in a separate interview, he added: “It’s always been a desire but we’ve always known that for the writers, it’s so hard for them to actually get through the series every year that we put the film on the back burner, that we would do it after the series was over, and that might be as soon as next year.”

In the meantime, a 24 TV movie, titled Exile, will air later this year. It will act as a prequel for the forthcoming seventh season, which premieres in January.

*************************

Seth Green & Brekin Meyer are close to agreeing on a deal to star in the 3rd series of Heroes. The pair who write and star in Robot Chicken, will appear in a multi-episode arc in the forthcoming third series. The will portray Atlanta based comic book geeks who cross paths with and act as advisors to one of the shows lead superheroes.

Season 3 of Heroes is due back on UK screens in September on both BBC 2 and BBC 3, a few days after its premiere on the NBC channel in the USA.

Sky1 To Air BSG Prequel – ‘Caprica’

August 11, 2008

Sky1 will air Caprica, the much-anticipated two hour prequel to Battlestar Galactica from executive producers Ronald D. Moore and David Eick.

As BATTLESTAR GALACTICA heads into its fourth and final season, CAPRICA will expand on the Galactica world and get deeper into the origins of the story whilst promising to deliver more of the passion, intrigue, political backbiting, family conflict and hardcore action that fans have come to love.

Set 50 years before BATTLESTAR GALACTICA, CAPRICA follows two rival families – the Graystones and the Adamas. Bound together by tragedy, their ensuing struggle will determine the fate of the 12 Colonies.

CAPRICA is a society rife with advanced technology. Little do they know they are trembling on the brink of the creation of the first CYLON (cybernetic life-form node).

The Graystones and Adamas come from different cultures and wildly different socio-economic backgrounds. Daniel Graystone (Eric Stoltz, The Mask, Pulp Fiction) is a computer genius and the leading businessman of the 12 Colonies. His wife, Amanda Graystone (Paula Malcolmson, Deadwood, ER) is an elite neurosurgeon. Joseph Adama (Esai Morales, NYPD Blue) is an immigrant, a lawyer with ties to the mob, and a father who is desperate to reconnect with his estranged son, William (Sina Najafi).

Their bitter rivalry will bring the end of life as they know it. Their children are the future.
